Sustainability in Eagan

Eagan's sustainability initiative, launched in 2022, aims to help future generations enjoy the same high-quality natural environment we value today. That's why staff members in all departments, from public works to police to community development, have been working together to create Eagan's vision for a sustainable future and to map out sustainable practices.

Residents Weighed In

In community surveys, residents value our natural environment on par with public safety and the economy and hundreds of residents ranked their specific sustainability priorities. The City of Eagan is reflecting these values by creating, investing in, and implementing programs, services, and policies that make Eagan the green community our residents desire.

Dedicated Resources

Eagan has hired a sustainability coordinator to help align our efforts and move our vision forward for a more sustainable future.

Why the focus on sustainability?

Minnesota's climate is changing and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Temperatures are increasing — especially in winter — and larger, more frequent extreme weather events are occurring. We see it when ice skating season is shorter, when we prepare as much for ice as for snow, and when we need to design stormwater infrastructure to accommodate heavier rainfall.

"There is nothing more essential to our collective health than the air and water around us," Mayor Mike Maguire said in his 2022 State of the City address.

Take Action—Sustainable Actions for Residents

Sustainable Eagan Academy

Led by members of the Sustainable Eagan Advisory Commission (SEAC) in collaboration with City staff, our innovative program is designed for people of all backgrounds. This series is community-driven and offers monthly sessions on diverse topics related to environmental sustainability.

Eagan Impacts

Here are a few of the ways the changing climate already affects life in our community. Our initiative will work to address services, programs, and policies around these issues and more.

How did we get here?

The City already works with residents and businesses to preserve Eagan's natural environment in many ways, including:

  • The Water Resources team and our volunteer programs work to protect and preserve Eagan's 1,200 lakes, streams, and ponds.
  • Eagan's forestry team's efforts along with the 12,000 trees residents who planted on private property help keep our air clean and healthy.
  • Later this year, all City facilities will be powered by wind and solar energy.
  • The City has charging stations for electric vehicles at the Eagan Community Center and City Hall, with future stations planned around the city.
