Below you will find specifications on election signs within the City of Eagan.

Size

Election sign size limitations are based upon the date sign is erected and the year of the election.

  • Election signs erected prior to 46 days before the state primary (prior to June 24, 2016) in a state general election year are limited in size to 16 square feet.
  • Election signs erected from 46 days before the state primary (June 24, 2016) in a state general election year, until 10 days following the state general election, do not have size restrictions.

Content

The name and address of the individual or committee responsible for erecting and removing the signs must be printed on the sign.

  • This is addressed in State Statute 211B.04.

Placement

Election signs are only allowed on private property, except where noted below*.

  • Obtain permission from the property owner before placing signs.
  • Signs are allowed on fences that have been erected on the property line.
  • The state statute prohibition of signs and campaign materials within 100’ of a polling place does not apply to adjacent private property within 100’ of a polling place.
  • *Election signs may be placed in the public right of way of a local street only if the sign is located more than five (5) feet from the back of the street curb where no trail exists, or where a trail exists, more than one (1) foot from the edge of the trail furthest from the street curb.

Election signs are not allowed on public streets or City owned property.

  • Do not place signs on public right-of-way (boulevard) areas except as noted above*.
  • Do not place signs on publicly owned properties. This includes but is not limited to park property, City Hall property, Fire Station property, Civic Arena property, Community Center property, city streets or similarly publicly owned properties.
  • Do not affix signs to utility boxes, poles, street signs or lights.

Election signs placed on public streets or on public property will have a sticker placed upon them and the signs will be laid down or removed to the impound area at the City Hall by the dumpster area on the lower level.

  • If adjacent to private property, the sign will be laid down. If adjacent to public property, the sign will be removed to the impound area at the City Hall.
  • Impounded signs are stored at City Hall at 3830 Pilot Knob Road Road within the sign bins on the lower level by the dumpsters. 
  • Every effort will be made to notify the candidate or their representative so that signs can be retrieved, using contact information from the Secretary of State web site.
  • Signs picked up on Monday through Friday of each week will be kept throughout the following week and disposed of on the second Monday following the week of pickup.

  • Diffley Road
  • Lexington Avenue
  • Lone Oak Road
  • Pilot Knob Road
  • Yankee Doodle Road

  • Interstate 494 (I-494)
