The mission of the Water Resources Division is to protect and improve natural, aesthetic, and recreational qualities of Eagan's lakes and wetlands for enjoyment by residents of the city and region.
Eagan has about 200 natural lakes and wetlands an acre or larger in size, and virtually all are part of a stormwater drainage system that includes over 1,200 natural and constructed waterbodies. Lakes and wetlands are biological systems affected by nutrients, especially phosphorus, in stormwater. When algae and macrophytes that thrive on phosphorus decay, dissolved oxygen can drop to stressful levels for sensitive fish and other aquatic animals. Impaired water quality diminishes recreational opportunities and aesthetic enjoyment and negatively affects property values.
