Governor Declares March 6 as City of Eagan Day Statewide In a 50-minute trip detailing its past 150 years, Eagan Mayor Mike Maguire, in his State of the City Address, recounted what he called “the special legacy” of a city now celebrating its Sesquicentennial. Governor Tim Pawlenty issued a greeting and proclamation declaring March 6 as City of Eagan Day throughout Minnesota. March 6, 1860 was when the Minnesota Legislature passed legislation signed by Minnesota’s second Governor, Alexander Ramsey, which created Eagan as a township. A fun black & white video depicted the bill signing and a pony express messenger bringing the news out to Eagan, where costumed volunteers reenacted the first town board meeting held in April, 1860.
On March 8th, 2010, at 2:37 PM, the Eagan Police Department responded to the report of an Independent School District # 196 school bus that struck a parked vehicle near Curry Trail and Daniel Drive. Upon speaking with the school bus driver, officers detected an odor of alcoholic beverage coming from his breath. The driver, Herby Paulson, age 61, failed field sobriety tests and was taken into custody for DWI.
Sometimes it helps to picture the circumstances of those who need our help at south metro food shelves. While 7% of adults in Dakota County are unemployed (as of December), that doesn’t explain the rising demand on local food shelves, which is up 40% from just three years ago. “Stories like [this] are among the many reasons we’re asking Eagan residents to lend a helping hand during our Sesquicentennial year,” says Eagan Mayor Mike Maguire. The City is asking churches, businesses and residents to help it reach an ambitious goal of collecting 150,000 pounds of food in Eagan’s 150th year. So far the total since January is a little over 10,000 pounds.
